An Anthology of 50 Mathematics Problems
Dr. Roy Lisker

Introduction

Since 2003 , Ferment Press has come out with 6 small books of mathematics problems. The problems, ranging from simple to challenging, come from many fields, including physics, topology, number theory, logic, Diophantine approximation, linear algebra, group theory and other branches of abstract algebra, projective geometry and dynamical systems.

The anthology avoids the advanced specialties, such as Category Theory, Algebraic Geometry, Differential Geometry, Foundations and others. The author of course can claim even a fair competence in only a few of these.

My purpose in creating these books has been to fill a perceived gap in the standard curriculum of most university mathematics departments. After a very basic education in fundamentals like Calculus and Linear Algebra, graduate students are encouraged specialize right away, in order that they can begin attacking open problems on the cutting edge of active research.

Such a policy often leads to a scientist who is only "half educated", even totally unaware of fields and ideas outside his domain of specialization.

This anthology is a selection of 50 problems taken from the 6 books already produced:
